How matching works.

A plain-language look at how Zera suggests people, what goes into a compatibility score, and why no score can promise a marriage.

The short version

A helpful guide, never a guarantee.

Zera’s compatibility score is our best estimate of how well two people’s answers line up. It’s built on ideas many couples, counselors and researchers find useful, but it is not scientifically proven to predict whether a relationship or marriage will succeed. Every pairing has exceptions: people with very different answers build wonderful marriages, and people who match closely sometimes don’t click at all. Use the score as a conversation starter. The real test is talking, meeting in person and getting to know each other.

Step 1

Who you can be shown

Before anything is scored, Zera only shows people who fit each other’s basic preferences, both ways: age range, who you’re looking for, and how much a shared faith matters to each of you. Then your own distance setting applies. People you’ve blocked or who blocked you, suspended or banned accounts, and anyone still on a city’s waitlist are never shown.

Step 2

The compatibility score

Your score with someone is built from six areas, weighted toward what we believe matters most for a lasting marriage:

  1. Faith & beliefs · 25% Church background, how often you attend, and the place you want faith to have in your marriage.
  2. Marriage & family vision · 20% When you hope to marry, children, and children either of you already has.
  3. Character & emotional health · 20% How you handle disagreement, how you feel close and secure, and steadiness under pressure.
  4. How you love · 15% How you like to give love compared with how the other person likes to receive it, both ways, using the five love languages.
  5. Personality & pace · 10% Social energy, dependability, warmth and the pace you like to move at.
  6. Values & everyday life · 10% Money, lifestyle, politics, drinking and smoking, interests and the values you picked.

How the score is worked out

  • Only shared answers count. A question only counts when you’ve both answered it. We never guess a missing answer.
  • We tell you how complete the picture is. Early on you’ll see “Early picture”. The more you both answer, the more the score means.
  • No one is ever 100%. Scores top out at 99. People are more than a number.
  • Private answers stay private. Your match sees the areas and the things you share, never your individual answers.
  • We may improve it. As we learn which matches lead to real dates, we may adjust the weights. Each score records which version made it.

Where the questions come from

The personality questions are a short, published 10-question research measure of the “Big Five” traits (the Ten-Item Personality Inventory by Gosling, Rentfrow and Swann, 2003). A 10-question version gives a quick, rough picture, not a full assessment. The love language questions are based on Dr. Gary Chapman’s book The 5 Love Languages, a popular framework for talking about love rather than a scientific test. Everything else comes from your own answers about faith, family and daily life.

Step 3

What decides the order you see people in

Your compatibility score matters most, and a few other things move people up or down so the app stays fair and focused on real dates:

  • Active people first. Members who’ve opened Zera recently are shown before quiet accounts.
  • Closer people a little higher. Someone nearby gets a small nudge up within your distance setting.
  • Attention is spread out. Members whose connections are full, or who are already getting lots of likes, are shown a little less, and new members get a short welcome boost.
  • Reliability counts. Members who leave likes unanswered for over a week, rarely reply, or repeatedly cancel late or miss dates are shown less. Honest date feedback from others also counts.
  • Zera+ and Spotlight. Zera+ members (including Zera Ambassadors, who get Zera+ free) are shown a little more often, and their likes are listed first in the other person’s Likes You. Spotlight (a paid boost, or one free each month with Zera+) puts someone first for a day, but only to people they’re already a good fit with. Your compatibility score is the same whether or not either of you has Zera+.

Date spots marked “Zera Partner” are businesses that partner with Zera. They’re suggested first when you plan a date, always labelled, and you can pick any place you like.

Please keep in mind

The limits of any matching system

  • No proof, no prediction. Compatibility scores, personality traits and love languages describe tendencies. They aren’t proven to predict who will be happy together, and they can’t account for everything that makes two people right for each other.
  • There are exceptions to every pairing. A high score doesn’t mean someone is right for you, and a lower score doesn’t mean they’re wrong for you.
  • It’s only as good as the answers. Answers are self-reported. People can answer quickly, change over time, or see themselves differently than others do. Zera doesn’t verify answers about faith, family or personality.
  • Not counseling or therapy. Zera’s insights are for getting to know each other. They aren’t professional advice. For that, talk to a licensed counselor or your pastor.
  • Not a background check. Photo verification confirms someone looks like their photos. It doesn’t check identity, history or intentions. Always follow our safety tips.
